Are DVDs-on-demand fulfilling a consumer need?

Cartoon Network has crafted a way for fans of their series Adult Swim to create their own DVDs of the material and purchase the items through their website. The variables include choosing up to 110 minutes of footage, menu options, DVD case, and disc image. The total price: $20. The service will launch with 100 episodes, and the full-catalog of original series will be available by year's end.

The Hollywood Reporter likens the deal to Warner Bros on-demand DVDs sold from their classic vault. The production costs from the studio might look the same, but Cartoon Network includes other user-generated content into the product.

Could the Adult Swim DVDs be tapping into something valuable inside the struggling DVD market?
