The Orioles will be seeing a familiar face this season. Veteran shortstop Miguel Tejada has signed a 1-year deal worth around $6 million. However, the O's will be shifting Tejada one spot over to the hot corner in accommodation of current SS Cesar Izturis. Third base will be a change for Tejada, as staying at short was one of the reasons he made the switch to the NL instead of sticking with Baltimore in 2007.
It will be Tejada's 14th season in the league. He has lost a bit of his power-hitting in the past few seasons. But he still holds a strong relationship with some of the most formidable players on the O's team. It won't be easy for any team playing in the shadow of the AL East. The unfair advantage of being a big-market team creates a cycle of allure to pull big talent. However, if there is anything Baltimore can do to break out on the scene, it will be to find a chemistry that puts a chip on their shoulders and potentially in a playoff (more likely wild-card) hunt. It's the same thing that allowed for the Tampa Bay Rays to make their push in 2008. Here's to the potential beginning of an underdog story.
